Divided Berlin and Divided Germany in Young Adult Literature: Crossing Borders from the East to the West and Vice Versa

In postwar Germany, inner-German borders were much disputed. While Germans widely deplored the division of their country and capital city, strong political forces in East West struggled for spheres influence. Hence, moving from to or is subject many narratives. Typically, a conflict arises between personal motives (to visit relatives, live with beloved partner) ideological persuasions (the belief socialism liberal democracy). This article discusses six young adult novels published Germany period 1958 2004 by focusing on economic attractions as well depiction German social disaster.
